                      Story of The Pueblos

1500’s  PUEBLOS OF NM Pueblo Indians had a flourishing, agrarian, relatively peaceful population living in compact apartment like dwellings; sophisticated underground irrigation system;  the pueblos had a well organized system of life, balanced with the environment;  accurate oral tradition; celestial knowledge, movement of the sun, moon & stars, cosmic happenings;  hunting/fishing;  society based on agriculture; including plants/herbs, medicines; women were the focal point of family life, and food preparation; they traveled and traded with Central & South America – in the 1500’s there were100 Pueblos and 50,000 Pueblo Indians – by 1680  only 22  pueblos &14,000 Indians remained, the holocaust of their civilization decimated by disease, starvation & execution, forced labor, tribute & religious suppression
